From the Podium to the Rental Dock: How Spain's Jet-Ski Champion Keeps His Fleet in Check with WAIV

For Miquel Cladera, jet-skis are much more than a business. As a Spanish jet-ski champion, owner of Full-Gas Motor, and operator of multiple jet-ski rental and watersports locations through Lassdive, Miquel has spent years around Yamaha WaveRunners—racing them, selling them, servicing them, and putting them into the hands of rental customers.

Based at Port Balís near Barcelona, Full-Gas Motor is an official Yamaha WaveRunner dealership, while Lassdive operates jet-ski rentals and other watersports activities across Barcelona, Costa Brava, and Costa Dorada.

Managing rental fleets across several locations presents a very different challenge from riding competitively. Customers have widely varying levels of experience, and powerful modern WaveRunners can quickly reach speeds that may be inappropriate in certain areas.

For Miquel and his team, the challenge is simple: How do you give customers the freedom to enjoy a jet-ski while still making sure they respect speed limits and stay out of restricted areas?

Speed Control Without Taking Control Away From the Rider

Rental operators have traditionally had limited options for controlling how customers operate a jet-ski.

Miquel had previously experimented with electronic systems designed to physically limit a jet-ski’s speed by interfering with the throttle or engine controls. In theory, this can provide direct control over the vehicle. In practice, he found the approach problematic.

Any system connected to the engine or throttle introduces another potential point of failure. Modifying the engine-control system can also affect the manufacturer’s warranty—an especially important consideration for an operator managing a fleet of new Yamaha WaveRunners.

Most importantly, an electronic problem that unexpectedly reduces engine power can create its own safety issue if a customer is offshore.

For Miquel, WAIV offered a different philosophy.

Rather than physically taking control of the jet-ski, WAIV warns the rider directly.

Using a Siren to Change Rider Behavior

Each WAIV GPS tracker includes a built-in siren that can be activated automatically based on the jet-ski’s location and speed.

Using the WAIV fleet-management platform, Full-Gas can define geographical areas with specific operating rules. A rental operator can, for example, create a low-speed area close to a marina or beach and define a maximum permitted speed within that zone.

If a rider exceeds the limit, the WAIV tracker sounds its onboard siren.

The result is immediate feedback to the customer—without reducing engine power or interfering with the WaveRunner itself.

For a rental operation, this distinction is important. The rider remains fully in control of the jet-ski, but receives a clear warning that the rules are being violated.

As Miquel describes the concept:

“WAIV’s siren system gives us the benefits of speed control without interfering with the performance of the jet-ski. We can warn the customer immediately without introducing the risk of an electronic throttle system unexpectedly reducing power and potentially leaving a customer stranded at sea.”

Keeping Riders Out of No-Go Areas

Speed is only one part of the challenge.

Rental operators may also need to keep customers away from swimming areas, shallow water, busy marinas, protected zones, or simply beyond the geographical boundaries established for a rental session.

WAIV allows Full-Gas to create geofences around these areas.

When a rider crosses a boundary, the tracker can immediately sound its siren while the rental staff receives an alert. This gives the customer a warning on the water at the same time that the team on shore becomes aware of the violation.

Instead of discovering a problem after a rental has ended, staff can react while it is happening.

Instant Alerts for the Team on Shore

While the siren communicates with the rider, WAIV simultaneously keeps the Full-Gas team informed.

Staff can receive text alerts when a customer speeds, enters a restricted area, or triggers another configured fleet rule. They can also view the location of each jet-ski from a phone, tablet, or computer.

This becomes particularly useful when managing multiple rental locations.

Rather than relying only on visual supervision from the beach or marina, managers have a live overview of activity across the fleet and can quickly identify which jet-ski generated an alert and where it is located.

For an experienced operator like Miquel, the goal is not to constantly intervene in every rental. It is to give customers the freedom to enjoy the water while making the important exceptions immediately visible.

Simple Installation Without Modifying the WaveRunner

Another advantage for Full-Gas is the installation itself.

WAIV AHOY is solar powered and requires no connection to the WaveRunner’s engine or electrical system.

On the Yamaha WaveRunners operated by Full-Gas, Miquel installs the tracker on top of the glove-compartment lid and secures it using zip ties. Installation takes only a few minutes and requires no permanent modification to the jet-ski.

That simplicity is particularly valuable for rental fleets. Trackers can be installed on new WaveRunners without cutting wires, modifying engine electronics, or creating additional service requirements.

And for someone who also sells and services Yamaha WaveRunners, maintaining the integrity of the original machine matters.

Proven on the Water by Someone Who Knows Jet-Skis

Miquel’s experience makes Full-Gas an unusual proving ground for marine tracking technology.

As a championship-winning racer, he understands the performance and handling of a personal watercraft at a level few rental operators do. As an official Yamaha WaveRunner dealer, he understands the importance of reliability, serviceability, and protecting the original equipment. And as a rental operator, he deals every day with the realities of putting high-performance machines into the hands of customers with very different levels of experience.

For Full-Gas, the appeal of WAIV is therefore not about restricting what a WaveRunner can do.

It is about giving rental operators a way to establish rules, communicate those rules to riders in real time, and know when intervention may be required—all without interfering with the jet-ski itself.

WAIV Across Spain and Portugal

The relationship between Full-Gas and WAIV has now expanded beyond Miquel’s own rental operations.

Full-Gas Motor is also a distributor of WAIV GPS tracking products in Spain and Portugal, making the same technology used in its own rental fleets available to other jet-ski, boat-rental, and watersports operators throughout the region.

WAIV products can also be purchased online through Lassdive.

For operators looking to improve visibility, enforce operating areas, and manage speed without electronically limiting their jet-skis, Full-Gas can offer something particularly valuable: firsthand experience using the system in real-world rental operations.

From the racetrack to the rental beach, Miquel’s approach is based on the same principle—use technology to improve control and safety without compromising the performance of the machine.
